Progress!

June 30, 2007 at 10:45 pm | In Blogroll, Progress, Snow Beat | Leave a Comment

After everal “I’m not really getting anything done” updates, I’ve suddenly managed to make a fairly large amount of progress with the game.  I’ve reached what might loosely be called “playable”, but its really just a test of timing to the beat at the moment, theres not even any warning that it’s incoming.  So, well, all in all it’s not representative of the final game, so there’s not much use putting it out here.

I reckon all of Bob’s animations should take 3-4 days max and the syncing with the arrows should take 1-2 days, so I think I should be done with the first song in about 5 days, hopefully giving me enough time to do it for at least one more.

Hopefully have a new screenshot up tomorrow, im trying a couple of things out, which should look pretty cool

…?

I have really no idea what to update with tonight, but I feel as though I should.

I geuss a progress report is in order, I’ve pretty much sorted out the entire background for the first song, which means once that’s done I just need to sort out Bob’s animations and sync everything up to the music.  To be perfectly honest I have absolutely no idea how long that’s going to take so I’ll keep it posted here how far through with that I am.

I’ll also post new screenshots if I add anything particularly new.

In order to stall time as I have done little to no visable progress, I’m going to start talking about the songs that will be in the game, well not so much talk, mainly a small chunk of stats and a link if you want to hear them.

Basic Mechanics 2

I havn’t got a screenshot to accompany this post because, well, I havn’t got that far yet, so you’ve just go to imagine this.

One you get the timing right off a jump, Bob will launch much higher into the air than usual.  While flying through the air bob will pass through arrows in time to certain notes in the song (similar to any other rhythm based game).  When he passes through these arrows, it’s down to you to press them.  Each arrow will cause Bob to do a certain stunt, left arrow for spin, down arrow for grab and right arrow for flip.  If you manage to do a chain of correct arrows, Bob will pull off an insane stunt that would otherwise be impossible.

Your timing for each stunt doesn’t have to be exact, but you will earn more points the closer you are, so try and keep to the beat, although things might get a bit tricky so high up in the air :D

Background Objects

Because Bob is staying at the same place on the screen and the ground flying past is fairly flat other than the odd jump, something has to move to show how fast he’s going.  That’s why the background is useful.  This is comprised of several of the objects you would see on a ski slope and it just adds that extra layer you need to the game.  Below are some example of what you might spot in the background.

Snow Beat Props

Apologies for the small update, but I’ve been trying to sync everything I’ve done so far with the music and I’ve had to work out things like the beats per minute to try and get everything in sync..

Basic Mechanics 1

To begin with, another Screenshot:

Snow Beat2

Apologies for the lack of Background props, I’m working on making them all first then completely populating the background for the whole slope with them to create an even sense of speed.

As you can see from the shot, Bob here is going over a jump.  To begin with in the game, each main beat (i.e. at the start of a bar) will have a jump and you will need to press [space] in time with the beat in order to launch yourself off the jump.  If you do this correctly, you’ll launch yourself into the air ready for the next part of the process (introduced tomorrow), but if you fail, you just slide over the jump and drop down a short way away, having missed out on a big points oppurtunity.

There will be variation in the size and shape of jumps, so some will keep you in the air longer than others, some only last for a short while before dropping back to the slope ready for another.  Most of the time in the game ought to be spent in the air if you do things right and that’s where things get interesting.

Apologies for the lack of update yesterday, got back later than expected and I couldn’t really have acheived anything anyway.

So today I have been starting work on the project between chemistry revision *cough* and I have this to show for it

Tada!  Not much to say, if you DO have any questions, feel free to comment….

Snow Beat

June 22, 2007 at 10:40 pm | In Snow Beat | Leave a Comment

There’s not much to add today because I’ve been kinda slacking off because today was the last exams i was particularly worried about and there’s going to be even less tomorrow because I’m gonna be out all day.

I’m not going to give away too much, but my idea for the rockout contest is called Snow Beat, it’s pretty much a cross between snowboarding and just a generic music game.  Currently, my character designs havn’t gone to plan which is why I havn’t posted them so as soon as that’s done I’ll put them up, could be tomorrow, but I won;t be back until about 9pm…

Another Diversion

I must apologise but this I see this as a really good oppurtunity and I actually have a great idea

Im really surprised that I didn’t spot this before so I had more time, but hey, I can still try now.  As you can see the deadline is July 15th. So it’s not like it’s going to be ages before it’s done and hopefully, with the way Im planning it, it shoulnd’t take too long to make at all, so it’s in well before the deadline and has lots of views :D

I WILL post details and artwork for my new project on here as I do them, hopefully they will at least keep you interested in coming back and the new project itself, if all goes to plan, may well provide a good chance to promote Zelda 2d

More Storyline Details

June 20, 2007 at 8:08 pm | In Blogroll, storyline | Leave a Comment

This is going to be tricky, I’m going to try and give you new info without giving away much or even any of the actual storyline.

Ok, let’s start with the basics, the game is a sequel to Twilight Princess,  It takes place about a year afterwards and link is living in Ordon again (although he goes to Hyrule a lot more now).  Most evenings he sits by the spring and reflects on his adventure, although he hasn’t seen the light spirits since.

The game relies quite heavily on the split timeline theory, although it could technically work just with the whole parallel universes idea.  I think they way I’ve planned it, it shouldn’t change anything that would affect any possible timeline theories, not being a member of Nintendo, I don’t know the actual timeline and I want my game to fit in, yet not mess anything up at the same time.

As you’ve seen in the moblin fight screenshots, all the Twilight Princess items are back again and you have them all from the start, leaving a lot of room for fresh new items giving way to new and (hopefully) difficult puzzles.
